A day built around one meal

I was in New Orleans last week, ostensibly to stretch out a road trip before heading home, but really, it was an excuse to wander and explore. I spent a good chunk of one morning ambling through New Orleans City Park, enjoying the quiet canals and the ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss. All that walking, as it often does, sharpened my appetite considerably. I’d heard a bit of chatter about a place called Bonafried, not too far from the park, and decided it was the perfect next stop.

Bonafried sits in a pleasant, unassuming corner of the city, the kind of spot that feels like a neighborhood fixture even if it’s relatively new. There’s no pretense here, just a clear focus on doing one thing exceptionally well: fried chicken sandwiches. As a home cook who spends too much time thinking about why certain flavors click, I appreciate a kitchen that understands the fundamentals.

Walking in, the aroma was immediately welcoming – a mix of savory spices, a hint of something sweet, and that unmistakable warmth of good fried food. The menu is straightforward, built around those sandwiches. I started with their classic, the Southern ($13.00). It's described as having a seasoned honey drizzle, and sometimes, those little details are what elevate a dish. This one delivered. The chicken breast was perfectly cooked: juicy, tender, with a craggy, golden-brown crust that held its crunch. The seasoning on the chicken itself was balanced, savory with just a touch of heat, and that honey drizzle added a subtle sweetness that played beautifully against the brine and the crispness. It’s a masterclass in texture and flavor balance.

Of course, you can't have a great sandwich without great sides. I opted for the Fries (Side $3.50), which were, as advertised, crispy and tossed in house seasoning. They were exactly what I want in a fry: hot, crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and seasoned enough that you don't even think about ketchup (though it was offered). I also tried a Regular Cold Drink ($2.00), the perfect simple accompaniment to cut through the richness.

On a subsequent visit – because one was simply not enough – I ventured into some of their other offerings. The Hot ($13.00), with its spicy garlic chili oil, brings a pleasant, lingering warmth without overwhelming the chicken's flavor. It’s got a kick, but it’s a friendly one, not an aggressive assault. I also found myself drawn to the Mack ($13.00), featuring their secret sauce. It’s a creamy, tangy concoction that reminded me of a really well-made comeback sauce, adding another layer of savory richness to the already fantastic chicken.

What makes Bonafried stand out, beyond the obvious quality of the chicken, is the consistency. Every sandwich I tried felt thoughtfully constructed, from the quality of the bun to the freshness of the toppings. They pay attention to the details that make a simple dish truly memorable. It's the kind of place you appreciate after a long walk, whether you've been meandering through the historic district around Jackson Square or taking in the art at the New Orleans Museum of Art. You want something satisfying, comforting, and executed with care.

For anyone looking for a genuinely good, unpretentious meal in New Orleans, especially if you find yourself exploring the City Park area, Bonafried is absolutely worth a stop. It's a testament to how far a focused menu and a commitment to quality can take you. Don't let the simplicity fool you; this is seriously good food.
