A day built around one meal
Okay, y'all, listen up! I had the *best* spontaneous food adventure the other day, and I just HAVE to share it with you. I was actually in Portland visiting my friend Sarah, who recently moved there. We decided to make a day of it, and I was on a mission to soak up all the Maine-y goodness I could find. We started the day at Bug Light Park, snapping some seriously Instagrammable photos of the Portland Breakwater Light. The fresh sea air definitely worked up an appetite!
Sarah suggested we swing by Becky's Diner, a place she'd heard whispers about from some local artists at the Portland Museum of Art. Apparently, it's a total institution. "Fishermen & others often pack this waterfront, no-nonsense diner serving American eats," is how Google described it, and honestly, that's all I needed to hear. I was sold!
And let me tell you, Becky's did not disappoint. This place is the definition of no-frills deliciousness. It's got that classic diner vibe, complete with comfy booths and a bustling atmosphere. It was packed, but we managed to snag a spot at the counter, which I actually preferred because I got to watch all the action in the kitchen!
Now, let's talk food. The menu is HUGE, but I was craving a classic. I ended up going with the Fried Haddock Sandwich ($14.00), and oh my goodness, it was heavenly. Perfectly crispy haddock, piled high on a bun. Sarah opted for the Turkey Melt ($16.00), and she was practically moaning with every bite. I snuck a little taste (as any good food blogger would!), and the horseradish dill sauce was the perfect tangy complement to the turkey and bacon. We also spotted someone devouring the Lobster Club (Market Price) which looked incredible, so that's definitely on my list for next time. Other standouts on the menu included the Rooster Burger with Fried Onions, Jalapenos, Cheddar Cheese & Chipotle Mayo ($14.00) and the Veggie Grinder ($12.00) which I'm told are both great!
They also have classics like the B.L.T. with Mayonnaise ($11.00) and even a Corn Dog for $8.00!
What makes Becky's special? It's more than just the food (though the food is AMAZING). It's the atmosphere, the friendly staff, and the feeling that you're experiencing a real slice of Portland life. You can tell it's a place where locals gather, and I love that authenticity.
After our amazing lunch, we headed over to Portland Head Light to walk off some of the food baby and enjoy more breathtaking coastal views. The whole day felt like the perfect Portland experience, capped off by the comfort food goodness of Becky's.
If you're ever in Portland, do yourself a favor and head to Becky's Diner. Seriously, just go. Order anything – I have a feeling it'll be amazing. You won't regret it!
