A day built around one meal
I was in Cleveland last week, mostly running errands and trying to stretch a quick trip into something resembling a weekend. After a morning spent delightfully confused at the Museum of Illusions downtown, my stomach started to rumble. I'm always on the lookout for a solid, unfussy lunch spot, and Banana Blossom Thai Cuisine, with its tagline of "unassuming spot with a large menu…," certainly fit the bill.
I'm glad I wandered in. Sometimes, the best meals are the ones you stumble upon when you're not expecting much. Banana Blossom isn’t trying to be trendy; it’s just serving reliably good Thai food at prices that feel like a throwback. The decor is simple, the service is friendly, and the menu is extensive – almost overwhelming, in the best way.
First Impressions & Standout Dishes
I started with the Fresh Garden Rolls with shrimp ($7.00). The rice paper was delicate, the fillings were vibrant, and the hoisin sauce with crushed peanuts had just the right balance of sweet and savory. A refreshing start, and a clear sign that someone in the kitchen knows their way around fresh ingredients.
Next up were the Sweet Chili Wings ($8.50). I usually avoid wings at Thai restaurants, but these were a pleasant surprise. Crispy, not greasy, and coated in a sweet chili sauce that had a gentle kick without being overpowering. They were dusted with sesame seeds, adding a pleasant textural element.
One thing that caught my eye was the sheer variety of soups. On a cooler day, especially after a long hike through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, I could easily see myself ordering a bowl of the Coconut Soup ($5.00) with chicken. The aroma wafting from a nearby table was enough to make me consider ordering a second lunch! But, wanting to sample a range of offerings, I refrained.
Finally, I couldn't resist trying the classic Pad Thai (lunch portion $10.00). It was exactly what you want from a Pad Thai: perfectly cooked noodles, a tangy sauce, and plenty of fresh bean sprouts and peanuts. The portion size was generous, especially for the price.
Worth the Trip
Banana Blossom doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. It’s a comfortable, consistent place to get a flavorful Thai meal without breaking the bank. It is also located conveniently, near the heart of downtown. I was able to walk there easily after my visit to the Museum of Illusions, and after lunch I took a stroll over to admire the architecture of The Arcade.
If you are looking for a great value spot to fuel up while taking in the sights of Cleveland, I would not hesitate to recommend Banana Blossom Thai Cuisine.
