A day built around one meal
I had a little time to kill in Orlando last weekend. I was running errands near ICON Park, and after a walk around The Orlando Eye, I realized I was starving. I knew I wanted something fresh, and the bright signage for American Japa Sushi Millenia caught my eye. I'm so glad it did.
From the outside, American Japa looks like a straightforward sushi spot. But inside, it's a genuinely lively place, with a menu that goes way beyond basic California rolls. I started with the Sunumono [ENTRIES], a tangy, vinegared cucumber salad that was so refreshing ($5). I couldn't resist the Chef's Nacho [ENTRIES] after hearing the server describe it. It was a generous portion of crispy wonton chips topped with spicy tuna, avocado, and a sweet chili sauce. Definitely shareable, and worth the $14 price tag.
For my main course, I decided to sample a few of their rolls. The *Philadelphia Special [URAMAKI SPECIAL] ($13) was a creamy, dreamy combination of salmon, cream cheese, avocado, and cucumber, topped with smoked salmon and a drizzle of eel sauce. The *Volcano [URAMAKI SPECIAL] ($13) lived up to its name with a spicy kick. It was filled with tuna, avocado, and cucumber, then topped with a mountain of baked seafood and spicy mayo. Both were beautifully presented and packed with flavor.
American Japa also offers a selection of Carpaccio dishes. I tried the *Salmon [CARPACCIO] ($12). It was thinly sliced and drizzled with ponzu sauce, a perfect light bite. The menu also has plenty of Hossomaki and Uramaki options. I was tempted by the *Tuna [HOSSOMAKI] ($7) and the *Shrimp [URAMAKI] ($8), but I was already stuffed. I did notice the couple at the next table raving about the Crispy Shrimp [URAMAKI SPECIAL] roll ($14), which looked incredible.
After lunch, I headed over to Universal CityWalk Orlando for a bit before driving home. It was a great day of exploring, fueled by some seriously good sushi.
What makes American Japa stand out? It's the combination of fresh ingredients, creative rolls, and a fun, casual atmosphere. Prices are reasonable, especially considering the quality and portion sizes. If you're looking for a sushi spot that's a little bit different, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. It's the kind of place you text a friend about, saying, "Hey, you HAVE to try this!"
