A day built around one meal
I found myself in Agoura Hills last week, lending a hand to a friend who’d just moved into a new spot. After a morning spent deciphering moving boxes and contemplating the logic behind storing winter coats in August, my stomach signaled it was time for a proper break. We were already in the vicinity of Whizin Market Square, so the idea of a sit-down lunch seemed like a small luxury.
That’s how I ended up at Agoura’s Famous Deli. The name, “We're Famous!”, always catches my eye, hinting at a place confident in its offerings without shouting about it. And walking in, it’s exactly what you’d expect: a modest spot with comfortable booths, a friendly hum of conversation, and the welcoming aroma of good, honest food.
The menu, as any good deli’s should be, is extensive, but I tend to gravitate towards the tried and true, along with a few surprises. For me, a deli often starts and ends with its soup. Their Matzo Ball Soup ($9.25) is everything you want: a clear, flavorful broth, tender chicken, and a matzo ball that’s light but substantial enough to remind you it’s there. It’s the kind of soup that feels like a hug from the inside, especially on a day where your muscles are protesting recent box-lifting.
If you're looking for something more substantial, the Mish Mosh Soup ($31.25) is a spectacle. It’s practically a meal in itself – half a boiled chicken, a matzo ball, kreplach, noodles, rice, and vegetables all swimming in that rich chicken broth. It’s a testament to the idea of comfort food, executed with generosity.
But Agoura’s Famous Deli isn't just about the classics. I was impressed by their salad selection. The CHINESE CHICKEN salad ($19.99) caught my attention, and it delivered. Grilled sesame-marinated chicken breast, crispy rice noodles, mandarin oranges, and toasted sesame seeds over fresh greens, all brought together by a homemade sesame dressing. It’s a well-balanced mix of textures and flavors, far from a token salad. Similarly, JESSICA'S SALAD ($19.99), with its grilled chicken, avocado, dried cranberries, and gorgonzola, offers a thoughtful combination that keeps each bite interesting.
For those who prefer a breakfast item even at lunch, their BELGIAN WAFFLE ($14.50) is a simple pleasure. It’s golden, fluffy, and served with warm maple syrup and whipped butter – a perfect treat. And don't overlook the Homemade Muffins ($5.25). They have a good variety, and they make for a nice little grab-and-go snack if you’re planning more activities.
After our satisfying lunch, with bellies happily full, we considered taking a leisurely stroll through Chumash Park to walk off the meal. Or, if we’d had little ones in tow, Kids World Family Fun Center isn't far, offering another way to spend the afternoon. It’s nice to have these local options, making a stop in Agoura Hills feel like a complete outing.
Agoura’s Famous Deli isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel; it’s just doing what it does very well. It’s a dependable spot where the food is consistently good, the portions are fair, and the atmosphere is welcoming. It's the kind of place that becomes a reliable fixture in a neighborhood, and for good reason. If you’re in the area, whether running errands or just exploring, it’s absolutely worth pulling up a booth.
