A day built around one meal
I had a rare free Saturday recently and decided to stretch my legs with a drive down to Miami Beach. I had some errands to run in the area, and figured I'd make the most of the day and see what was new. After watching the huge cruise ships maneuver out of the channel from South Pointe Park Pier, I was ready for a bite. That's when I stumbled upon Abuela's Tacos.
This isn't a place chasing trends; it's a place serving consistently good food. The menu is focused, and the prices are reasonable, which I always appreciate. You won't find fusion tacos or deconstructed anything here, just solid, flavorful tacos made with care.
What immediately caught my eye (besides the tantalizing aroma) were the fresh juices. After a few hours in the Miami sun, the Mango juice for $6 sounded like the perfect refresher, and it absolutely was. It was the real deal, not some sugary syrup concoction. I also tried the Passion Fruit juice ($6), and it had that perfect balance of sweet and tart that really woke up my palate.
But let's talk tacos. I went with a classic: carne asada. The meat was tender, well-seasoned, and the tortillas were warm and soft – clearly freshly made. The toppings were simple: cilantro, onion, and a squeeze of lime. Sometimes the best things are the simplest. I appreciated that they didn't overstuff the taco; it was perfectly balanced and easy to eat. The al pastor was also a winner, with a touch of sweetness that played nicely with the savory pork.
After my satisfying meal, I took a walk along Lummus Park, enjoying the ocean breeze and people-watching. It's a great reminder of the energy of Miami Beach. Later in the afternoon, I cruised over to Bayside Marketplace to grab a souvenir for my daughter. You can easily make a day of it in this part of town.
Back to Abuela's: the atmosphere is casual and welcoming. It's the kind of place where you can grab a quick bite and feel completely satisfied. While there are several other juice options, the Strawberry, Orange, or Pineapple ($6 each) are great choices.
If you're looking for a no-frills, delicious taco experience in Miami Beach, Abuela's Tacos is a solid choice. It's a place that focuses on getting the basics right, and that's something I can always appreciate. It's now on my mental list for when I am in the area again.
